PORT DOVER, Ont. -- A pair of shuttle buses will travel along a 60-kilometre stretch of Lake Erie each weekend this summer, stopping at wineries, beaches, farm markets and other tourist-friendly sites.

A total of 17 locations between Port Dover and Long Point will be served by the South Coast Shuttle, an initiative being launched by Norfolk County.

The communities of Vittoria, Normandale, Turkey Point and Port Rowan are also on the route, which passes through an emerging wine region.

"It's not a long distance, but if you're travelling by car and you have a couple of glasses of wine at a winery, that certainly limits your range," said Clark Hoskin, tourism manager for Norfolk County.

The shuttle will take about one hour and 20 minutes to travel from end to end. The $6 one-way fare allows riders to get off to visit various stops and later resume their journey.

"The main goal is to lure some new tourists to the area" from urban centres such as Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener and London, Hoskin said.

"We're an area of Ontario that many generations ago was a very popular tourist destination, but over time it's kind of fallen off the radar. So we're trying to get back on the radar and get people down here because we definitely have fantastic attractions."

The buses will run from May 16 to Sept 27, between 11 a.m. to midnight.
