Police Chief Bill Blair says he is “prepared to take legal action” after Doug Ford accused the leadership of the Toronto Police Service of leaking information about an impending subpoena against Mayor Rob Ford.

Ford told reporters at city hall on Friday that police informed the Toronto Star about the yet-to-be-served subpoena as “payback” and suggested that the leak was further proof that the city needs a “change at the top” of the police service.

Ford also said that the Star should be responsible for serving the mayor since “god knows they have a direct line to the Chief.”

It should be noted that the Star has not named the source of the information about the impending subpoena, which is reportedly in connection with the trial of Alexander “Sandro” Lisi on extortion charges.

“I am very disappointed that they would release this to the Toronto Star and some other media outlets, but again maybe it is a little payback,” Ford said, refusing to say what police would be seeking revenge over. “You have the leadership of the police department releasing a subpoena to the media before they release it to the mayor and you wonder why we need a change at the top? That is one of the reasons we need a change.”

On Friday morning the Star reported that a meeting between Ford and lead investigator Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux was arranged for Thursday so the mayor could be served, however it was postponed after the media became aware.

In a short statement released to the media several hours after Doug Ford’s remarks, Blair accused the Ward 2 councillor of “lying” and raised the spectre of legal action.

Ford, however, refused to back down when contacted by CP24.

“As I said, that is my opinion and I am entitled to my opinion,” he said.

Both Ford brothers have been critical of a police investigation into the mayor entitled “Project Brazen 2” in the past with Doug Ford calling on Blair to step aside on several occasions.

Last week, the TPS board decided not to renew Blair’s contract as police chief, making his last day April 25, 2015.

The reasons for the board’s decision were not immediately clear.

“You know what this isn’t even news,” Rob Ford told reporters when asked about his brother’s comments Friday. “It might be news to you guys, but it is not news to the average taxpayer. The taxpayer wants their money saved.”

Lisi is accused of threatening two alleged gang members in an attempt to recover a video of Ford smoking crack cocaine sometime between May 16 and May 18, 2013 , just days after Gawker and the Star first reported about the video's existence.

If Ford is subpoenaed and the Crown decides to call him to the stand Ford would be obligated to testify under oath at a preliminary hearing set to begin on March 2, according to the Star.
