An extreme cold weather alert has been issued for the city ahead of what is expected to be a frigid Family Day weekend.

The temperature at Pearson International Airport dipped to -16 C on Thursday morning but it felt closer to – 25 C with the wind chill.

It is not expected to warm up anytime soon either.

Environment Canada is predicting a high of – 7 C for today along with an overnight low of – 11 C.

The temperature will then rebound slightly on Friday with a high of – 4 C in the forecast, however it will plunge back down in time for the weekend with a high of – 16 C forecast for Saturday and a high of – 10 C forecast for Sunday.

Today is the fifth day that Toronto has been under an extreme cold weather alert so far in 2016. In 2015, the city was under extreme cold weather alerts on 34 different days just in the months of January and February alone.

As part of the cold weather alert, the city will be increasing its services for the homeless, which includes handing out TTC tokens for people to get to shelter and increased street outreach.

Two extreme cold weather drop-ins are also open 24-hours a day in both January and February.

"During extreme cold weather, residents are encouraged to call or visit vulnerable friends, neighbours and family to ensure they are not experiencing any difficulties related to the weather," the city said in a news release issued Thursday. "Those most at risk of cold-related illness are people who work outdoors, people with a pre-existing heart condition or respiratory illness, those taking certain medications, infants and young children, and those who are homeless."

The alert will remain in effect until further notice.
