Ward 2 Coun. Rob Ford says he is “deeply ashamed” of racist comments he made while serving as mayor and understands that he brought “discredit” on both himself and council as a whole.

Ford made the comment in council chambers on Tuesday morning ahead of the expected tabling of a report from Integrity Commissioner Valerie Jepson calling on Ford to make a “sincere, specific and public apology” for his use of racial slurs on two separate occasions that were widely reported in the media.

In the first incident, Ford reportedly got into a cab while in the presence of his staff on St. Patrick’s Day, 2012 and called the driver a derogatory term and then "made mocking fake language sounds." In the second incident, Ford was reportedly heard on tape stating “Nobody sticks up for people like I do, every f----ing k---e, n----r, f----ing w-p, d-go, whatever the race. Nobody does. I'm the most racist guy around. I'm the mayor of Toronto."

“I am aware of the hurtful nature of my comments and the fact that they are absolutely unacceptable. I understand the concerns brought forward in the report and the standards brought out by the Ontario Human Rights Code,” Ford said on Tuesday. “Mr. Mayor and members of council I am deeply ashamed by what I said and I recognize that it brings discredit to both myself and council as a whole. I wish to offer my heartfelt apology for my words and actions.”

Toronto resident Samuel Getachew, who filed the initial complaint with the integrity commissioner’s office, was present at city hall on Tuesday and said he is satisfied with Ford’s apology.

Getachew, however, noted that Ford had no interest in his forgiveness when he approached him following his apology.

“I went to shake his hand and tell him I wished him well and accepted what he said and he kind of pushed me away and asked ‘is that you who complained about me?’ and just departed from where I was,” Getachew said. “We don’t expect perfection from Rob Ford. According to the standard we are used to I am still satisfied and I wish him well.”
