Durham Regional Police say a 22-year-old motorcyclist has died in hospital after a crash in Ajax last night.

Police say the motorcyclist and an SUV collided near Salem and Rossland roads shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Investigators say witness reports suggest the late model Yamaha Sport bike was travelling northbound on Salem Road North when it collided with an eastbound Ford Explorer.

According to police, the impact of the collision caused the SUV to roll over into a ditch. The driver of the SUV, who was uninjured following the crash, remained at the scene and the motorcyclist was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the victim was later transported to a Toronto trauma centre, where he died from his injuries.

The collision is still under investigation and police ask anyone with information to call Det. Const. Bryson of the Traffic Services Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5255.
