Toronto police say a skull found near a trail in a park in Toronto’s Harwood neighbourhood belongs to Rigat Ghirmay, a 28-year-old woman who was murdered in 2013.

Police say they were called to the Lavender Creek Trail, northwest of Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West on Wednesday afternoon after a bag containing a human skull and bones was discovered.

After a forensic examination, investigators confirmed the skull belongs to Ghirmay.

Her torso was found in a bag in a nearby trail area in May 2013.

In Sept. 2013, Adonay Zekarias, now 44, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and committing an indignity to a body.

Zekarias is currently serving a life-sentence for the murder of Nighisti Semret, 55, in the city’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood in Oct. 2012.

Staff Insp. Greg McLane said Zekarias will stand trial for the murder of Ghirmay sometime in 2017.

Police say they will return to the Lavender Trail area on Friday to conduct a wider search.

Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said he contacted Ghirmay’s brother who lives in the United States, to tell him they had found her skull.

“He took some comfort in that,” Giroux said.

Giroux said that at the time of Ghirmay’s death, she and Zekarias were involved in a romantic relationship.
