PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Provincial police say four snowmobilers escaped injury after falling through the ice on a lake northeast of Peterborough.

Emergency crews were called shortly after midnight Thursday to the area of Grigg's Island on Jack Lake after getting reports that two snowmobiles seen travelling on the ice had suddenly disappeared.

Const. Jason Folz says the four riders -- two men and two women -- managed to get out of the water and make it to a cottage.

He says officers followed their tracks to the residence, where they were found safe that morning.

Folz says three of them were from Toronto while one was from Clarington.

Provincial police are reminding the public that mild weather has made lakes in the area unsafe for winter activities.
