Toronto police say a 21-year-old Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger in North Toronto last month is now in police custody.

The arrest is connected to an incident that allegedly took place on Sept. 15.

A 25-year-old woman told police she got into an Uber vehicle near the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. The alleged assault took place inside the vehicle once the driver arrived at the woman’s home in the Lawrence Avenue West and Avenue Road area.

Uber Canada said at the time that it had removed the suspect from its platform and offered any possible assistance to police.

On Monday, a suspect identified as Amritpal Singh, of Scarborough, surrendered to police at 32 Division in North York.

He was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday at Old City Hall at 10 a.m.
