Travellers looking forward to ditching their cars and riding the new Union Pearson Express train will still have to pay for parking at the airport.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency building the $456-million rail line from Union Station to Pearson International Airport, confirmed to CP24 on Friday that UP Express tickets will include a $2 airport fee to make up for the parking revenue losses that are expected when people start taking the train instead of driving to the airport.

Metrolinx spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins said the agency has agreed to pay the Greater Toronto Airports Authority a fee for building an UP Express station at Pearson. The initial estimate in the 2011 agreement was $1.85 per passenger, but a final amount has not yet been determined, said Aikins.

It is not yet known what the final cost of the tickets will be.

Approximately 5,000 riders a day, or 1.8 million annually, are expected to ride the train when it begins operating ahead of the 2015 Pan Am games next summer.
