Striking workers at York University have voted to accept the latest offer presented by the school.

Members of CUPE 3903 Unit 1 voted 95 per cent in favour of the offer, while members of Unit 3 voted 90 per cent to accept the deal.

Both units will return to work Wednesday.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Mamdouh Shoukri, university president and vice-chancellor, called the vote ‘excellent news.’

“I know this past month has been extremely challenging for everyone, and particularly for our students, who are working hard to finish their courses and programs and to successfully complete their terms,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped to facilitate these agreements, as well as our faculty and staff for their flexibility and commitment to keeping York’s facilities open. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to our students for their patience and understanding during this difficult time.”

Information on the first of two exam period schedules will be released Wednesday, the release states. Convocation, scheduled for June, will continue as planned.

Union members voted on the tentative agreement reached on Sunday at the Rexall Centre Tuesday afternoon.

The agreement includes wage increases, recognition of LGBTQ as an equity employment unit and full back pay for time on strike.

“It is a great agreement,” CUPE’s Faiz Ahmed told CP24 following Tuesday’s vote.

“The members recognize that their hard work and their perseverance really paid off. “

The strike began March 3. While most classes at the university resumed over the last two weeks, tutorials and grading were impacted by the ongoing labour dispute.
