A 10-year-old girl is dead following a head-on collision in Ajax on Monday evening.

The crash took place on Taunton Road between Church Street and Westney Road at around 6 p.m.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash.

The child and her mother were travelling westbound on Taunton Road when they were struck by a vehicle that crossed over from the eastbound lanes.

The driver of the vehicle travelling eastbound was a male believed to be in his 20s, officers said.

Speaking at the scene after the crash, Const. George Tudos with Durham Regional Police said Taunton Road is “one of the main arteries” for the region.

“There is a lot of vehicular traffic specifically around that time in the rush hour,” he said. “So collisions are common here and we’ve had numerous incidents on Taunton Road – not specifically here at this location that I’m aware of but it’s a very busy road.”

The mother of the child and the driver of the other vehicle were both taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries following the crash.

Road closures have been implemented in the area to accommodate a police investigation.
