A group of former politicians, business and community leaders are set to make an announcement Thursday concerning Toronto Mayor John Tory's key campaign promise — the SmartTrack east-west rail plan.

The group of community and businesses leaders. including former Ontario cabinet minister Alvin Curling, are set to make the announcement at 10 a.m. Thursday in Trinity Square, east of city hall.

The 53-kilometre surface rail proposal was touted during the 2014 mayoral campaign as Tory’s solution to overcrowded subway trains heading into the downtown core, and would allow east-west transit users a way to bypass busy segments of the existing subway system.

The proposed line includes stops in areas including North Etobicoke, Liberty Village, and Markham.

Just before the federal election began, Conservative leader Stephen Harper promised $2.6 billion in funding for the project.
