A 19-year-old cyclist is dead after being struck by a dump truck in Ajax, Durham Regional Police confirm.

It happened near Church Street and Delaney Drive at around 1 p.m.

Police say the dump truck, operated by a 52-year-old man, was stopped at a red light on Delaney Drive at Church Street. The cyclist, who was on the sidewalk, was also stopped at the light.

As the light turned green, the cyclist started peddling across the road while the truck turned southbound on Church Street North. The truck knocked the cyclist to the ground as it turned, and the teen ended up underneath the truck near the rear driver’s side wheels.

The cyclist was seriously injured and died of his injuries at the scene, police said.

The driver was taken in for questioning, but released a short time later without being charged.

The cyclist’s name has not been released as some of his family members have not yet been notified.

The intersection was shut down for several hours so that police could investigate the collision.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident and didn’t speak with police to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5226 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
