Toronto’s medical officer of health has ended an extreme cold weather alert for the city as temperatures are expected to rise this weekend.

A high of -5 C is predicted in the city for Saturday, and a high of – 4 C expected Sunday.

While still below the freezing mark, those temperatures are much warmer than the frigid -20s the city has seen through much of February. Wind chills have made those chilly temperatures feel even colder.

Extreme cold weather alerts are usually issued by the city in order to open increased shelter space for the homeless.

In its release Saturday, the city said added shelter services for the homeless will remain in place for today, closing by Sunday at 10 a.m.
