The City of Toronto has issued another extreme cold weather alert today.

Despite the temperature rising over the weekend to a relatively warm -7 C Monday morning, Environment Canada is predicting a rapid return to -25 C overnight with the wind chill.

The weather agency has not issued any weather warnings, but cold weather alerts from the city triggers services for the homeless such as 24-hour drop-in warming centres, additional shelter beds and increased street outreach.

The city is also encouraging residents to check on vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives to see if they are being negatively affected by the weather. Toronto’s chief medical officer, Dr. David McKeown, says hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature drops below 35 C and lead to severe consequences including organ failure and death.
