The family of one of two boys shot to death late last week is speaking out, pleading with witnesses to come forward and identify those responsible.
Kwame Duodu, 15, and O’She Doyles-Whyte, 16, were shot dead on Grandravine Drive on Friday, Aug. 23. Police said Monday that they have seen footage taken from a surveillance camera in the area showing several suspects who reportedly fled the scene on bicycles.
Those bikes have been located near the shooting scene but the suspects are still on the loose.
“We are very devastated about the killing that has occurred last Friday afternoon,” said Kwame’s uncle Samuel Addo. “The only thing I can say about Kwame is that he was a bright, kind, generous young boy. He never got in trouble with anyone or police.”
Police say they have canvassed the neighbourhood for potential witnesses and have left messages with several people.
“There are people within the (housing) complex we have appealed to,” said Det. Sgt. Terry Browne. “We have left voicemail messages for them. We are asking those people to speak with us.”
Brown said police would like to speak with the witnesses as soon as possible because their memory of the events may become tainted as time goes by.
Police are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting.
Kwame’s sister Comfort Duodo said her brother was about to celebrate a birthday and was looking forward to getting his driver’s permit.
Addo said his nephew was a camp leader at the Boys and Girls Club and was getting ready for school.
“He bought shoes for his younger brother with his first paycheque, that’s the kind of kid we are talking about,” he said through tears.
“He did not have trouble with anyone. He was minding his business right in front of his house and someone decided to end his life,” he said. “We beg people, anyone who knows something, to bring an end to this senseless and barbaric act.”
