A two-alarm fire at a Junction Triangle rooming house over the weekend that left one person dead has now been deemed a homicide, police announced Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters and police responded to the fire on Dupont Street, near Perth Avenue, at around 12:20 a.m. on May 17.

At the height of the blaze, roughly 45 firefighters were on scene.

The lifeless body of the victim was discovered on the building’s third floor approximately 15 minutes after emergency crews arrived.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim is not being released, pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Six people were living in the residence, Toronto Fire Services Capt. Mike Strapko previously told CP24.

Following an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, and witness accounts, the homicide unit was notified.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
