Toronto firefighters were called in to battle a pair of fires that broke out overnight.

One of the fires occurred at a Money Mart on Lake Shore Boulevard West and Sixth Street, just east of Islington Avenue, at about 4 a.m.

A police spokesman told CP24 firefighters had to break into the store to attack the flames.

Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control in a short amount of time, but people who live in apartments above the payday loan and cheque-cashing store were forced out of their homes for several hours.

Police briefly closed Lake Shore Boulevard as firefighters battled the blaze.

The cause is under investigation.

Fire breaks out in east end

At 3 a.m., fire crews doused a blaze at a building near Danforth Avenue and Logan Avenue in the city’s east end.

Police told CP24 careless smoking is to blame for the fire, which caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.

Two neighbouring structures were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries were reported in either incident.
