There was plenty of fireworks as the economic development committee met on Tuesday but not the type that sometimes break out during contentious debates at city hall.

In separate votes, the committee asked staff to report back to city council on the feasibility and cost of staging two additional fireworks shows.

The first would see fireworks set off from atop the CN Tower and city hall next New Year’s Eve in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017.

The second would see a new fireworks show held at Nathan Phillips Square every Canada Day, beginning in 2016.

The motions were brought forward by councillors Jim Karygiannis and Mary Fragedakis.

In his motion, Karygiannis said he was inspired to raise the specter of using the CN Tower and Nathan Phillip’s Square for fireworks displays following the success of similar shows during the Pan American Games this past summer.

“These events were feats of pyrotechnic design and engineering,” he wrote.

It is not immediately clear whether a Canada Day fireworks display at Nathan Phillips Square would replace the one typically put on at Ashbridge's Bay Park.
