Four family members were sent to hospital with non life-threatening injuries Monday after they were struck by lightning in Morningside Park.

Toronto EMS says a teenage boy and five-year-old girl were among the victims, which all suffered minor injuries.

While paramedics were on their way to the scene, the ambulance they were travelling in was damaged when lightning hit a nearby tree. No one was injured, but the vehicle was forced to go out of service.

Andrew Alexander, who witnessed the incident on Monday afternoon, said he was attending a barbeque at the park when his group took cover from the thunder and lightning.

A few others, he said, were sitting around a tree when lightning struck.

"We saw the lightning hit the tree," Alexander told CP24's Travis Dhanraj Monday night.

"We just saw these people topple over."

Within 10 minutes, Alexander said paramedics and police were on scene.
