Homicide detectives are investigating after two females were found dead at a home in Whitby on Friday afternoon.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded to an apartment building on Hickory Street South, near Dundas Street East and Brock Street South, earlier this afternoon.

Homicide and forensic investigators are currently on the scene and are leading the investigation.

A source tells CTV Toronto that the bodies are of a mother and daughter and the case is being treated as a murder-suicide. Police would not confirm this but say the deaths are suspicious in nature.

The source also tells CTV Toronto that the mother was ordered to report to court to hand the girl over to her father today. When she did not appear in court, police went to her apartment on the fifth floor and discovered the bodies.

Details on the gender and age of the victims were not immediately provided. The circumstances surrounding their deaths were also not immediately clear.

Keeley Murphy, a resident of the building where the pair was found, said the mother was a quiet woman who kept to herself, and the girl, aged 6 or 7, played with many of the other children who lived in the building.

Murphy said she kept her own children from staying at her home on Friday night, so that she would not have to explain to them what had happened.

Police said no one has been taken into custody at this this time. An autopsy for both victims has been scheduled and results may be released sometime this weekend.

On the sidewalk outside of the building, “You will be missed” was written in blue chalk.

The chalk message identified the mother as Paria and the daughter’s name as Sarah.
