Those who regularly use the 504 King streetcar are in for a bit of a headache next week.

The busy downtown route will be forced to go on diversion for four days to accommodate a pedestrian promenade on King Street as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.

The closure, which will shut down King Street between Spadina and University avenues, has been an annual occurrence for the past three years.

This year, the street festival will close the busy downtown road from September 8 at 5 a.m. until September 12.

In a 2015 report to the TTC board, TTC staff said they do not support the TIFF closure due to its impact on service.

“Regardless of the various approaches tried by the TTC to retain and provide a quality service under such circumstances, the reliability, speed, and overall quality of service on the 504 King route were seriously affected,” the report read.

“For this reason, TTC staff do not support the closure of King Street.”

But on Tuesday, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told CP24 that the event is “bigger than just the TTC.”

“We have shared concerns about the closure and its impact on customers, but TIFF is important to the city and is bigger than just the TTC, so we'll do all we can to ensure service runs as smoothly as possible,” he said is an emailed statement.

The closure will also impact the 514 Cherry streetcar.

“The 501 Queen streetcar, which is on diversion because of water main work right now, will be a good alternative, as will the 504 bus supplement that we have normally everyday anyway,” Ross said.

“On the Monday, the street festival will be wrapped up and the 504 King will be back to its normal routing.”
