An 82-year-old man has died of his injuries in hospital after his vehicle crashed into a fence and a tree in Whitby Saturday afternoon.

It happened at the intersection of Trent Street West and Byron Street South at around 2:30 p.m., Durham Regional Police said.

According to police, the driver of a Saturn was injured after his car left the road and crashed into a fence and a tree on a residential property.

Ornge said an air ambulance that was in the area responded to reports about the collision.

The air ambulance landed in the parking lot of a nearby high school in the area of Henry and Harriet streets and transported the man to a trauma centre with critical injuries.

The man, identified by police as Hendrick Hoogkamp of Whitby, died of his injuries a short timer later.

Police said road conditions were clear at the time and the man may have suffered a medical episode while driving.
