A man who was fatally shot during an altercation with police earlier this week has been identified by family and friends as Daniel Clause.

The 33-year-old man was killed shortly after a TTC toll collector at Warden subway station reported being robbed at gunpoint just after midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

The suspect ran from the scene towards a Toronto Community Housing complex on Warden Avenue. Police had a description of the suspect and located Clause outside the building where the confrontation took place.

Clause, a local rapper who appeared in YouTube videos , was pronounced dead at the scene and the province’s Special Investigations Unit – Ontario’s police watchdog agency – has been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. It is protocol for the SIU to investigate cases where police are involved in incidents resulting in serious injuries, assault and death of civilians.

Clause’s sister Jennifer posted a message on Facebook saying the man’s funeral will be held at Griffin Mack Funeral home on Danforth Avenue though the date and time have yet to be determined.

“Our family and his friends are suffering greatly from this loss,” she wrote. “RIP my beloved brother. We all love you and will miss you more than you’ll ever know.”
