A man who fell asleep in a dumpster after drinking too much alcohol narrowly escaped serious injury or death when he was dropped into a garbage truck, Toronto police say.

Police told CP24 the garbage truck operator wasn’t aware a man was taking a nap in the dumpster when its contents were unloaded into the truck early Thursday morning.

As the man was trapped amid piles of garbage, the truck made its way to a lane near Ossington Avenue and Queen Street West, where the driver exited and heard a commotion.

Police said the driver heard the trapped man yelling for help. The driver opened the back of the truck, pulled the man out and called 911 for an ambulance.

The man, who avoided being crushed in the back of the truck, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but police said he was not injured.
