A private math tutor and his fiancée have been arrested and charged after a 14-year-old girl who studied under the tutor alleged she was sexually assaulted in their North York home last year.

Toronto police say the 32-year-old math tutor taught a 14-year-old girl for a number of years. The accused’s 23-year-old fiancée volunteered at several of the same institutions.

Investigators allege the couple befriended the victim, inviting her to their home in the Lawrence Avenue East and The Donway East area.

During the summer of 2014, while the male suspect was working at the Markham and Etobicoke locations of Spirit of Math, a private tutoring company, police allege the couple sexually assaulted the victim at their home.

Police arrested the two accused on Tuesday, Det. Sgt. Greg Payne said.

Kevin Chan and Kayla Drumonde, both of Toronto, have each been charged with one count of gang sexual assault and one count of sexual interference.

They were scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Wednesday morning.

Police believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward. Chan has worked or volunteered in several public schools and tutoring firms between Sept. 2000 and Nov. 2015.

Police say some of the locations Chan has been affiliated with include:

Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate from Sept. 2000 to June 2001, Avondale Public School from Sept. 2005 to Nov. 2007, where he was a volunteer teacher, Willowdale Middle School from Sept. 2008 to March 2009, Flemington Public School from March 2009 to June 2009, Light in the Attic Learning in 2011, Spirit of Math in Markham and Toronto from Sept. 2011 to Aug. 2014, and Mathnasium of Don Mills from Nov. 2014 to this month.

Darrin Langen, the president of Spirit of Math, told CP24 the organization is "cooperating fully" with the ongoing police investigation.

Toronto District School Board spokesperson Ryan Bird said Wednesday "There is no record of (Chan) ever being employed" by the TDSB.

Employees at Mathnasium of Don Mills told CP24 that they administered a background check on Chan, and he passed.

Outside the tutoring centre, Mehri Safari said Chan was "really polite and such a nice guy," when he occasionally tutored one of her children over the past several months.
