TORONTO -- New Democrats are urging Ontario's ombudsman to investigate whether the government is doing enough to protect children in unlicensed daycares.

The call comes after a two-year-old child died at a home daycare north of Toronto.

The NDP say this and other child deaths in unlicensed daycares cry out for a rigorous review of government policy.

Education officials have admitted that they failed to follow up on two of three complaints lodged against the daycare in Vaughan where the toddler died earlier this week.

They say they're investigating the daycare and will review all complaints filed against unlicensed daycares in the past year.

But the NDP say that's not enough and there must be an independent review of whether the government is doing the job right.
