One cyclist is dead and another is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a collision in Hamilton this morning.

It happened at around 11:35 a.m. on Highway 5, near Sydenham Road.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Graham Williamson said a vehicle was heading eastbound on Highway 5 approaching Sydenham Road when it came into contact with two cyclists.

Williamson said both cyclists sustained life-threatening injuries and police later confirmed that one of the cyclists was pronounced dead at the scene.

The OPP's technical collision investigation team is at the scene looking into the circumstances around the crash.

Williamson added that Highway 5 could be closed to traffic between Millgrove Side Road and Ofield Road until 4 p.m.
