One person is dead after an SUV collided with another vehicle and caught fire on Highway 409 during the evening rush hour on Tuesday.

Toronto paramedics said they were called to the eastbound lanes of Highway 409, between Martin Grove Road and Kipling Avenue, at 4:38 p.m. for a report of a vehicle fire.

Toronto firefighters said they arrived to find an SUV had collided with a car. The fire in the SUV was quickly extinguished.

An occupant of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Two occupants of the other vehicle involved sustained minor injuries in the crash.

“They (the two other patients) were able to get out prior to the vehicle being engulfed in flames,” OPP Const. Prash Niranjan told CP24 at the scene. “The vehicles are unrecognizable to the point that they have melted down to sheer metal.”

Police say the eastbound lanes of Highway 409 are closed as a result.
