Ontario Provincial Police say “close to 20” homes will have to be demolished after a tornado touched down in Angus earlier this week.

A total of 102 residences have been temporarily condemned to allow building inspectors time to assess their structural integrity in the wake of the storm and though that process has not yet been completed it is becoming increasingly clear that some residences will not be salvageable.

“We are looking at closer to 20 homes that will have to be demolished completely. The rest of the homes are in varying stages of structural ability,” OPP Const. Kelly Daniels told CP24 Saturday morning. “The next stage will be having the engineers say which ones you can go in and which ones you can’t go in.”

The EF2 tornado formed in Angus at around 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday and lasted about a minute before heading towards Barrie, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

Speaking with CP24, Daniels said that crews have now removed all large debris from the area and are focussing on systematically going through each affected home.

There is still no timeline on when residents may be able to return to their homes, however Essa Township Mayor Terry Dowdall told CP24 Saturday night that 90 out of the 102 home that were temporarily condemned have now been inspected.

Dowdall said 119 firefighters came out to help clean up the debris and work will continue Sunday.

"It is safe to say the cleanup is pretty well done," he said.
