Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie has confirmed it sent a patient with Ebola-like symptoms to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital.

Dr. Charles Gardner, the medical officer of health for the Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit, told reporters Saturday night that the patient was transported to Toronto purely as a "precaution."

"From the information we have received this is a low-risk situation," Gardner said.

Hospital officials say they were notified by paramedics on Saturday morning that they would be arriving with a patient with Ebola-like symptoms who had a recent travel history to West Africa.

"When they came to our hospital, we enacted our RVH Ebola protocols that we are well rehearsed in," Jim Shaver, the hospital's chief of staff, told reporters Saturday.

The patient was brought to RVH’s decontamination unit and was treated in a negative pressure trauma room before being transferred to Sunnybrook.

Officials say the person arrived back in Canada 10 days ago but would not confirm the gender or age of the patient.

No specific time frame was given for when test results can be expected, however, Gardner said results usually come in about six hours after blood samples are received by the lab.

According to Ministry of Health, this is the 16th person tested for Ebola in Ontario. All other 15 patients tested negative for the deadly virus.
