SCUGOG, Ont. - A 61-year-old pilot is in hospital with serious injuries after a small-plane crash in Scugog Township, Ont., near Port Perry.

Durham Region police say the man was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for treatment after he was seriously injured in the Saturday afternoon crash.

The Transportation Safety Board says the plane was a single-engine ultra-light airplane.

Police say a couple was watching the plane, debating whether it was in distress, when they saw it begin to spiral out of the sky.

Police say the couple helped the pilot, the lone occupant of the plane, and called emergency services.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
