Police in a Scarborough police division are launching a one-week crackdown on dangerous and distracted driving today amid a spike in motor vehicle accidents.

The Reducing Collisions Campaign will run from today until Aug. 16 in 41 Division and will involve officers paying particularly close attention to intersections and other locations where there have been a high number of accidents.

“We have had approximately 1,700 accidents across 41 Division so far this year, we have had two fatalities and we are just trying to get the message out there for people to obey the rules of the road and to not drive distracted,” Sgt. John Murphy told CP24 on Monday morning.

According to Murphy, police will be on the lookout for drivers who are speeding, running traffic lights or stop signs or making unsafe lane changes. Murphy said that police will also be cracking down on distracted driving offences.

“We see people using handheld devices right across the city and we are trying to get the message out for people to obey the rules of the road,” he said.

The area covered by 41 Division officers spans from Victoria Park Avenue in the west to Brimley Road in the west, Lake Ontario in the south and Highway 401 in the north.
