Police say they have located a missing 12-year-old boy and that he is safe.

The boy had been last seen in the Sheppard Avenue and Meadowvale Road area at around 5 p.m. on Monday but was located at around 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police previously said that they were concerned for the boy's safety as he functions at the level of a five year old.

“The concern is that he doesn’t really get around, doesn’t know his way around too much,” Toronto police Sgt. Shane Miller said on Monday. “He knows a little bit about (the) TTC.”

A command post had been set up at Chief Dan George Public School at 185 Generation Blvd.

“We have officers on the ground,” Miller said of the search efforts. “We’re doing backyard searches with flashlights and we have our canine unit that has been called out.”

It is not immediately clear where the boy was located.
