Toronto police say they are only “a name away” from solving a stabbing homicide that took place on Eglinton Avenue Tuesday night.

The incident occurred in a second-storey walk-up apartment near Oakwood Avenue shortly after 10 p.m.

Police were notified of the incident after a woman with stab wounds on her arms fled from that apartment to a restaurant across the street to call for help.

“Something went terribly wrong inside that apartment,” said Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan, adding that the woman, who is in her thirties, was terrified as she was chased while she fled.

When police arrived at the apartment, they found the lifeless body of a man inside with puncture wounds and no vital signs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect somehow gained entry into the apartment when the two victims were inside. Ryan said police believe the suspect and the victims all knew each other, but it is not known if the suspect forced his way in or not.

The male victim’s identity is not known and his next of kin has not yet been notified.

The woman is expected to recover from her injuries.

Police said the suspect is known to frequent the neighbourhood. He is described as a clean-shaven white male, 26 to 28 years old with short blond hair and blue eyes. He was wearing blue jeans and a light blue long sleeve shirt with an orange collar, police said.

“It’s our belief that this attacker frequents that area often, if not on a daily basis,” Ryan said, adding that many witnesses have seen the suspect in the past, but don’t know him by name.

Neighbours told CP24 that the victims had moved into the apartment about a month ago and that police had been called there multiple times in the past.

Police confirmed that they had paid a visit to the apartment as recently as early this week.

Police also said the male victim had had his car stolen last weekend, but it is not known if that incident is connected to Tuesday’s night’s stabbing.
