Police are searching for a man and a large black van after an 11-year-old girl was approached in Whitby last Friday afternoon.

Durham Regional Police say the girl was walking home from school at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 on Bakerville Street when the girl said a man in a van slowed down and drove alongside her.

The girl said the male driver called out to her, claiming to know her mother and asking her to get in the van.

Police said the girl ignored the driver and kept walking away from the van.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s or 30s, with dirty blond hair. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and possibly gold rings on his right hand.

The vehicle is described as a black van, larger than a minivan, with tinted windows.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Const. Sullivan at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 1847.
