The Queen Elizabeth Way is down to one Toronto-bound lane and two Niagara-bound lanes near Stoney Creek in Hamilton after a collision involving two transport trucks and a pickup truck Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Fruitland Road shortly after 4 p.m.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the collision sparked a large fire that engulfed both transport trucks.

Schmidt said that that the fire blackened the roadway and destroyed both transport trucks.

The trucks, which were empty at the time, will now have to be lifted off the roadway using cranes, Schmidt said.

“Everybody is accounted for and that is very good news but certainly it is a pretty spectacular fire,” Schmidt told CP24 earlier on Thursday afternoon.

The highway was completely closed at first, however three lanes were later reopened.

It is not clear how long the closure will remain in place but Schmidt said it could be “some time yet.”
