Seven people were rushed to hospital this morning following a serious collision on Highway 401 near Cambridge.

It happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Highway 6 shortly after 3 a.m.

According to investigators, a tractor-trailer lost control and struck a guard rail and a short time later, an SUV rear-ended the truck.

Speed is considered to be a factor in the collision, police added.

Of those injured in the crash, one suffered critical injuries while another sustained serious injuries.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CP24 that both vehicles sustained heavy damage and there is a large amount of debris at the scene.

"Investigators are looking into all factors, including whether or not alcohol was a factor. Obviously we have one person ejected so seatbelts look to be a factor," Schmidt said at the scene Thursday morning.

"The distance these vehicles travelled post-collision, obviously speed and aggressive driving may be a factor."

All eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours but have since reopened.
