Peel Firefighters say six homes were destroyed by fire in a new neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Brampton.

Const. George Tudos said emergency crews were called to the area of McVean and Countryside drives sometime after 3 p.m. for a report of multiple homes on fire.

It is not known if anyone is injured.

It appears the homes that caught fire are under construction.

Firefighters in the area tweeted that they need water tanker trucks because fire hydrants in the area do not work.

Brampton Fire said it has requested assistance from Caledon Fire and 11 trucks are on scene battling the blaze. Firefighters tweeted that the fire was largely under control by 4:30 p.m.
