BELLEVILLE, Ont. -- Some residents evacuated due to a natural gas leak in downtown Belleville, Ont., have been allowed to return home, and it's expected the rest of the people displaced by the emergency will be able to return this morning.

About eight streets in the downtown area were evacuated after a six-inch gas main was ruptured by the contractor working on a road construction project on Front St. late Monday afternoon.

Evacuees stayed with relatives and friends or at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre.

Residents who live east of Pinnacle St., and on Victoria Ave., and Patterson and Campbell streets, returned to their residences last evening, as did residents of the Quinte Living Centre and McNabb Towers on Front Street.

However, residents on Pinnacle St. remained out of their homes overnight.

Belleville police Staff Sgt. Sheri Meek earlier said there were no injuries associated with the leak.
