A bomb scare forced Milton students into lockdown Wednesday afternoon after someone called in an anonymous threat to police.

Halton police said they received a call from a male indicating he had a bomb in the area of Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School, located at 1145 Bronte St. S., sometime before 11 a.m.

The school was placed under lockdown by police as a precaution as a bomb sniffing dog from the Toronto Police Service was brought in to assist in the search of the building.

No device was found during the search, police confirmed shortly after 3 p.m.

“All the kids and staff within the school are safe,” Halton police Sgt. Chantal Corner said. “The school is very large and new, and has three different levels, so it did take a little bit of time (to complete the search.)”

Police escorted students and staff from the school. Students were then transported to an area where they were picked up by parents or guardians.

Corner said the lockdown was a necessary measure as the threat was assessed.

“There is no way of proving whether the threat is real or not, so the police do have to use the resources available in order to ensure public safety,” she said.
