A suspect wanted in relation to an incident where an Oshawa high school student was slashed while standing near his school has been taken into custody.

Durham Regional Police say they were called to Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School near Rossland and Stevenson roads at about 11 a.m.

Investigators said the victim was standing near a driveway adjacent to the school when a suspect who was a passenger in a blue van pulled up to the victim and stabbed him in his side.

The victim made his way inside the school where emergency crews were notified of the attack.

Police say they believe the victim was targeted.

Paramedics transported him to local hospital for treatment. He was conscious and breathing following the incident and police said Friday he remained in hospital.

Investigators said the suspect was spotted on a GO train passing through Whitby on Satuday.

He was arrested at the Pickering GO Transit station without incident.

A suspect identified as Randy Chessman, 21, of Oshawa is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault and weapons dangerous.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
