Police say that a 17-year-old boy was shot dead in a targeted attack in front of a North York townhome on Saturday morning.
The shooting took place in front of a Toronto Community Housing complex at 11 Shoreham Court near Jane Street at around 11:30 a.m.
Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone said the victim had just arrived at the townhouse to visit some friends who lived there when two suspects fired four to six shots at him.
Police say their preliminary investigation suggests that the shooters fired on the victim over a fence before fleeing the scene.
Investigators say that the victim was not known to police, but believe it was a targeted attack. Carbone said the victim was not alone outside when he was hit.
The victim was taken to a local hospital by someone other than paramedics but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Carbone said the suspects arrived and left the scene in a dark-coloured SUV.
An uncle of the victim, Orlando Monteith, identified him as Caheem Monteith. Police would not confirm the victim’s identity on Saturday evening.
Monteith said his nephew was a “lovely person,” who loved basketball.
“(He) liked to wear jogging suits and (Air) Jordans and stuff. It’s just sad for us right now. It’s very sad.”
According to police, there are a number of witnesses who are currently being interviewed at a nearby station. Police also plan to review surveillance camera in the area.
“We’re trying to hold up,” Monteith said. “We just want the people responsible – just come forward. We’re a family that’s grieving right now. We just lost my dad last year … Now to bury my nephew, it’s like one thing after the other.
CP24 did speak to several witnesses at the scene who said they heard multiple gunshots at the time of the shooting.
