An hour-long power outage in Toronto's downtown core trapped a handful of people in elevators and disrupted the start of the work day for thousands of others Tuesday morning.

Up to 8,000 customers were without electricity at the peak of the outage before power was restored shortly after 9 a.m., said Toronto Hydro spokeswoman Jennifer Link.

The boundaries of that outage were Queen Street to the north, The Esplanade to the south, Bay Street to the west, and George Street to the east.

The power went out shortly before 8 a.m. after a thunderstorm rumbled through the downtown core.

Link said the cause of the outage is not known, but the weather may have been a factor.

As Toronto Hydro crews worked to restore electricity, firefighters were called in to rescue people who were trapped in seven elevators, a Toronto Fire Services spokesman told CP24.

No injuries were reported.

Police officers directed traffic at a number of downtown intersections until traffic signals began working again. Office workers gathered on sidewalks until the lights came back on.

Small, scattered power outages were also reported in North York, East York and the Beach.

People are asked to report power outages to Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
