A three-year-old girl was rattled, but unharmed after her coat became trapped in an escalator at St Clair West subway station Monday afternoon.

The girl was on the escalator with her father when her coat became trapped near the bottom around 12:30 p.m.

“Somebody else riding the escalator saw what was happening and hit the stop button right away, preventing any further damage to the girl,” Sgt. Jeff Seymour said.

Paramedics and firefighters responded to the station and initially believed that the toddler herself had become trapped in the escalator.

Workers dismantled part of the escalator to free the girl.

Crews were finally able to free the distraught child after 40 minutes and determine that only her coat had been trapped.

Pictures form the scene showed the girl’s shredded coat in tatters amid the escalator parts.

Mike Strapko of Toronto Fire Services said both the girl and her father were shaken by the incident, but that the girl was not seriously injured.

“There were no injuries. Some superficial scratches and she was pretty scared. They took her off to the hospital for precautionary measures,” Seymour said.

Eastbound streetcars were bypassing St Clair West Station during the incident, but resumed servicing the station around 1:20 p.m.
