Toronto may break a temperature record for this date as a mild air mass brings unseasonably warm conditions to the entire region.

The mercury is expected to climb to 12 C in Toronto by mid-afternoon Saturday, which would snap the seven-year-old record for Jan. 12 of 9.6 C.

The rare mid-winter thaw is the result of a “mild and moist air mass” from the Gulf of Mexico, according to a special weather statement from Environment Canada.

“We will get a taste of spring with temperatures rising to the double digits in many areas. These temperatures will be some 10 to 15 degrees above normal values across the entire district. In fact, afternoon temperatures in a few locales may actually reach the mid-teens, making it feel much more like late April,” the statement reads. “As a result of the very mild temperatures a number of new maximum temperature records may be set. Most if not all of the snow on the ground across Southern Ontario and in southern parts of Eastern Ontario will melt by late today.”

The warm temperatures will continue through the weekend before dropping down to seasonal levels on Monday.

The average temperature for this time of year is – 2 C.
