The TTC has officially inked a deal with a project management company to oversee the completion of the over-budget Spadina subway extension.

Bechtel Canada Co. has been contracted to direct the completion of the project, the TTC said in a news release Monday.

In its release, the TTC said the company has already begun work on the project and will form an integrated team with TTC personnel to oversee the work.

Bechtel’s project manager will report directly to TTC CEO Andy Byford throughout the three-year contract.

The deal is worth as much as $80 million. However the TTC said that amount is included within a previously announced $150 million overage for the project, which will be shared between the city and York Region.

Previously slated to open in 2016, the TTC is trying to complete the project by the end of 2017 after a staff report said it would require at least a year more than planned.

The TTC board approved the sole-source contract with Bechtel at a meeting last week. However TTC CEO Andy Byford declined to name the company until the deal was signed.

Not everyone was lauding the deal Monday.

In news release of its own, the union representing TTC workers slammed the deal as “short circuiting public procurement policies.”

In the release, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 head Bob Kinnear said he has doubts about the company based on some of its former projects in London and Boston.

However Byford said Friday that he has ‘absolute confidence’ in Bechtel.

A media update on the project’s progress is expected sometime next month.
