Thousands of TTC riders could soon be on track to quicker commute times, the TTC says.

The transit service said Monday it will be rolling out 10-minute-or-better service on 52 bus and streetcar routes across the city over the next few months between the hours of 6 a.m. and 1 a.m.

“On these routes, your bus or streetcar will arrive more frequently. It will be more reliable for all riders,” TTC Chair Josh Colle said at a news conference.

He said the move will mean that vehicles will be less crowded as well as more frequent.

“It also makes it a more attractive option for people to opt maybe out of their cars or other options when they know that they can leave their house and that there will be a bus or streetcar or subway waiting for them within 10 minutes of them arriving,” Colle said.

The improvements were included in the TTC’s annual budget and some of the improvements have already been rolled out.

The move compliments an announcement last month that the city is introducing more frequent service on 11 of its overnight routes and introducing seven new overnight routes. At the same time, Mayor John Tory said the TTC would increase off-peak service on buses, pointing out that more and more people are travelling outside the traditional rush hour periods.

The TTC said the 10-minute-or-better service network will include all four subway lines, 10 streetcar routes and 37 bus routes.

It will be rolled out in the fall and fully implemented by some point in 2016, the TTC said.

The enhanced service is expected to cost $11 million per year. However Colle said it is expected bring in an additional $4 million in fare revenue.
