Two men are dead after scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Toronto’s High Park neighbourhood Friday morning.

The scaffolding came down just after 11 a.m. at a condo development just south of High Park on Bloor Street near Pacific Ave.

One person was pronounced dead on scene. Another was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later, according to Toronto Police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu. That man was 37 years old, she said.

The area has been blocked off to traffic while police investigate what led to the accident.

A construction worker on scene said he was friends with one of the men who was killed and described him as an "amazing guy" who had just welcomed a new grandchild last week.

"Always a smile on his face," he recalled.

The union overseeing the contractors told CTV News that they wouldn't comment on the case, other than to say that "all safety precautions were taken and this is just an accident."
