A woman is clinging to life in hospital and her husband is in custody after she was attacked in a case of domestic violence in Aurora on Friday night, police say.

Police said the 33-year-old victim suffered head injuries when she was struck with a weapon during the attack, which occurred on Lewis Honey Drive, near Bayview Avenue and St. John’s Sideroad, at about 8:15 p.m.

Family members, including children, were present when a male called 911 from within the home, police told CP24.

A male suspect was arrested at the scene, said York Regional Police Insp. Gary Miner.

The victim suffered stab wounds, a Newmarket courtroom was told when her 46-year-old husband, Mohammed Mahdi, made a brief appearance Saturday morning.

Mahdi is charged with attempted murder, police said.

Mahdi was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court Tuesday.

During Saturday's court appearance, Mahdi required an interpreter to communicate with a Crown attorney and judge.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
